Therefore, Bering Sea snow crab will remain closed <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">for the 2022\/23 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.seafood-harvest.com\/index.php\/2022\/09\/21\/holland-america-is-1st-line-for-certified-sustainable-alaska-seafood\/\">season<\/a>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6037\" src=\"https:\/\/www.seafood-harvest.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Seafood-News-11.jpg\" alt=\"seafood news\" width=\"500\" height=\"250\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.seafood-harvest.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Seafood-News-11.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.seafood-harvest.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Seafood-News-11-300x150.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"page3R_mcid11\" class=\"markedContent\"><\/span><span id=\"page3R_mcid12\" class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">ADF&amp;G appreciates and carefully considered all input from crab industry stakeholders prior to making this <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">decision.<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Understanding crab<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">fishery<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">closure<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">s have substantial impacts<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">on<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">harvesters, industry,<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">and communities, <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">ADF&amp;G<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">must balance<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">these<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">impacts<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">with<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">the need for<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">long<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">&#8211;<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">term conservation and<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">sustainability of crab stocks.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"page3R_mcid12\" class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">M<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">anagement of<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Bering Sea snow crab<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">must<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">now<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">focus on conservation and rebuilding<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">given the condition of the <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">stock. Efforts to advance our science and understanding of crab population d<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">ynamics are underway. With crab <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">industry input, ADF&amp;G will continue to evaluate options for rebuilding, including potential for sustainably <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">fishing during periods of low abundance.<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">This will allow ADF&amp;G to work on issues related to<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">state<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">and<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">federal <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">co<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">&#8211;<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">management,<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">observer coverage, discard mortality, and<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">fishery<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">viability<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">. <\/span><\/span><span id=\"page3R_mcid13\" class=\"markedContent\"><\/span><span id=\"page3R_mcid14\" class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">A<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">dditional<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">information will be available during the annual ADF&amp;G<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">\/Crab Industry<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">meeting.
